The C3 gene is responsible for making the protein complement component 3 [C3]. This protein is a group of proteins that fight bacteria and viruses that cause inflammation and eradicates debris from cells and tissues. Changes in this gene increase the risk for [AMD].
Distorted forms of Complement factor B have been found in a lot of AMD patients. It is a single chain polypeptide that circulates in the blood. This group of genes are involved in regulating the immune system.
