Dry macular degeneration has three stages, it can occur in one or both eyes:
Early- the light-sensitive cells [rods & cones] in the macula gradually break down, slowly obscuring central vision in the affected eye. You could have problems recognizing faces and notice that you need more light for doing normal tasks than you did before. A early onset indicator is a straight line appearing wavy. Yellow deposits under the retina [known as Drusen] is an early indicator for AMD which is usually detected during a routine dilated eye exam.
Intermediate -you may begin to see blurred areas in the center of your vision.
Advanced -loss of the macula function, central vision is lost and can lead to blindness
